Made a punk denim jacket
I'm officially back on my goth arc otherwise known as the thread where I make my own punk jacket and also reduce, reuse, and recycle.
I took a blue denim jean and used black Rit dye and dye fixative to make a jack worthy of sacking Rome in! Wait, wrong goths.
Rit has a guide on how to do this yourself on their website but the steps are pretty easy.
You'll need:
- 1 denim jacket
- 1 bottle of Rit black dye
- 1 bottle of Rit dye fixative
- 1 c. salt
- 1 tsp. dish soap
- 6 gallons of hot water
- paper towels
- gloves
- metal tongs
- large bucket
1: Prepare your workspace. Gather everything together. Put on your gloves. I used the kitchen sink but if your sink is made from a porous material use a bucket.
2: Heat 3 gallons of water to boiling and then pour into sink. You can do this in piecemeal, but the hotter you can get your water the better the process will work. Stir the salt into the water until dissolved then add dish soap and the dye.
3: Place the jacket into the dye water. Use tongs or other implements to massage the dye into the garment continuously working it in every few minutes for 1-2 hours.
4: Drain sink, squeeze out the excess dye the jacket. Do NOT rinse the jacket. Place jacket aside and heat up the next 3 gallons of water, pour into the sink, and add the dye fixative to the water. Then add the jacket back in and work the fixative in as you did with the dye massaging the jacket every few minutes. Do this up to 1 hour then drain.
5: Expel the dye and fixative from the jacket by washing and wringing it out in the sink under cold water. This make take several sink fulls of rinsing. Vigorously massage the dye out until the water drains clear.
6: Wash the jacket in the washing machine under cold water with detergent and dry in the dryer with an old towel (however, I dried it with other black laundry)
