23andMe hacked, targets were mostly Jewish

Wired magazine reported that the genetics profiling company 23andMe was hacked and data on Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese folk were targeted. The data was posted on the black hat website Breech Forums.

The attack appears to be rather unsophisticated and the hackers used "credential stuffing" to gain access to accounts. Essentially looking for users who were involved in past breaches and using info such as leaked passwords to guess their current password. This is why it is important if you value your security and safety on-line to please use a password manager like Bitwarden, KeePassXC, or other software. In addition, always use 2FA to offer an extra layer of protection in the event your password is exposed.

Seeing who the targets are, it's pretty safe to guess the hackers in this instance were most likely Nazis and they potentially have the web credentials of millions of Jews which seems like the buried lede here. Moreover, they posted the breached information to share with other criminals. If you are Jewish, now's probably a good time to sit down with your relatives and teach them how to stay safe on-line. Honestly, everyone should be helping their friends and family stay safe on-line.
