My mind often cycles out what games I'll be obsessed with for a temporary time before it burns out and fades into something else. For example once a year for about 2 weeks straight I crave to play skyrim until I just get burnt out on it. Here recently I'm into pokemon really hard core, playing two games right now to combat my holiday blues and loneliness. Does anyone else do this with their gaming quirks?

Re: Cycles of gaming obsessions
I don't know if it's an obsession, but the game I really love is "Cities: Skylines" which if you know anything about is resource-intensive but has tons of mods to make your city look however you want. My last city (pop. 155k+) got wiped out when my computer crashed back in August and just because of all the mods I like to use and such I just haven't felt much gumption to make another, but it's so tempting to jump back in.
I wanted to cry when it happened and the crash happened while I was playing! Rebooted and all my hard drives were data corrupted. I wonder if it was a BTRFS kernel issue or something with the encryption containers getting corrupted.
My usual gaming fare outside of C:S are indie and platformers. I just really never got into modern gaming because I find the realistic 3D graphic environments to be a bit disorienting. Stuff like Celeste, Hollow Knight, Undertale is more my jam. And of course I love some good old retro gaming. Firing up "Clash at Demonhead" or "Street Fighter 2010" is always a lot of fun. And I do agree, Pokemon is a vibe. Especially around the holidays.
I need to get back into streaming games. Maybe I should make a Twitch this time and put on something sexy. I hear that's what everyone is doing these days.

All of the games I was emulating on phone did something similar, the app I used did an update which to my surprise acted as a reset on everything making me lose all my save files, especially on one game that spent months grinding and working to complete, leaving me to give up completely after losing that save data

God i can't stop playing doom with brutal doom mod, if i open Spore i just play it for like 23-27 hours without leaving the computer. If i make a modpack which interests me in minecraft or just terrafirmagreg i can't stop playing. I don't know if that sounds like a gaming obsession. Good thing all the comps i am using have problems with the graphics card driver so it doesn't go to the discrete card.
when lunarpunk brutal doom deathmatch?
